Who hasn’t had a playlist called skate, skate music, or skateboarding soundtrack? Skating and music have always gone hand in hand. How many skate vids do you end up skipping ‘cause the song just doesn’t set the right vibe? You can throw down the gnarliest bombs, but if the track underneath is whack, the whole part gets blown.
It all started way back. First the Powell vids, then the World Industries ones. But the very first that really hit me was Questionable.
Everything was on point, almost synced, just pure stoke. I even had the cassette dubbed off the VHS, with trucks grinding and wheels spinning in the background. So many mornings on the bus to school, replaying Pat Duffy’s or Carroll’s part. And the hype from Rick Howard skating to Grey Cell Green? Unreal. Most of those tracks were totally new to me.
They shaped my taste. Even now, whenever I hear one of those songs, it instantly takes me back to that trick or that feeling from the first time I saw the vid.To this day, I still find new music through skate videos.
Now with all the sharing online, everything’s right there. I could go on about 411, EE3, Static, Cherry…There’s an endless list of songs forever tied to skate parts for me.
